Acupuncture Heals Health Issues Beyond Pain: Interview with Dr. A Li Song

The United States is still new to the thousands of years old practice of acupuncture. Working as the New York College Dean, Song's goal is to teach others in the United States how to carry on the ancient Asian arts of healing.

Acupuncture and Acupressure Used to Treat Medical Problems

Song sings the praises of how acupuncture and acupressure, on specific points and areas of the body, can treat many disorders. As a long-time sufferer, with severe pain and migraines, it is a pleasure to meet with Dr. Song and hear of a chance for relief. To feel her healing hands, and to speak with her about using the “Acupuncturist’s Approach" to heal ones’ body holistically, gives one hope of a pain relieved future.

Carol Ruth Weber: Why are so many Doctors quick to medicate with a pill when there are alternatives?

Dr. A Li Song: I feel that there is a lack of understanding among health professionals, or wishing, to even look into alternatives to learn.

CRW: Are there times when you believe that Eastern and Western medicines should be blended?

Dr. ALS: The natural approach should always be used. In situations, such as cancer, holistic healing should be combined with modern medicine in order to completely treat the patient, not just the disease.

CRW: Suffering from fibromyalgia I have all ten health issues that you say acupuncture will help. Could this be the answer to getting me on the road to recovery or at least feeling much better?

Dr. ALS: [Emphatically] yes, most patients have vast improvement!

CRW: Can acupuncture actually help in healing illnesses like cancer and Parkinson's?

Dr. ALS: Although acupuncture and acupressure cannot cure serious conditions, natural healing can help the syndrome, pain, and issues associated with medical treatment.

Healing Hands Are True Magic

One is fortunate to feel Song’s healing hands personally. As the doctor thoughtfully examines and answers any questions, her sweet voice and soothing manner puts life at ease immediately. One can see why Dr. Song is Dean of the College.

The first treatment involves filling out forms for understanding of one’s health history and problems. The doctor speaks to the patient and does an intake involving checking pulse and looking at the tongue. This is what determines what organs problems are stemming from.

The Acupuncture Process

Dr. Song explained how traditional medicine is based on asking questions and observing patients:

“Checking the tongue and pulse determines where a disorder is coming from, and what organs it is related to. Then we can use the meridians [channels] connecting the organs to know the points to place acupuncture needles and acupressure, along with massage. This opens stagnations and produces energy to release the body’s toxins, enhancing the organs’ functions. The goal is to rid pain, improving chi (energy) and blood circulation.”

  • Acupressure is used to pin point which meridian points need to be treated with a needle or pressure.

  • The special acupuncture needles are placed. The patient feels only a slight sensation when needles are inserted.

Dr. Song explained that the more of a sensation felt after the needles are placed means that it is working and healing the body.

  • Needles are left in place to do their job while the patient lays relaxing in a quiet and dark room.

  • As the needles are removed acupressure is applied, along with massage to sooth the body.

After the treatment Song takes the time to show treatments that the patient can do for themselves at home. This is called “Follow Up Treatment.” Song explained that the home treatments allow for the patient to help the improvement process.

After the first treatment, an evaluation takes place to see how the patient is responding. Based on the assessment, the following week’s treatment will be determined and be adjusted to perfect the management of taking care of the patient. Usually ten therapy treatments are done and then followed with a maintenance program.

Hope for some relief is here at last - never be afraid to dance!
